Affirmations – what on Earth are they? I hear you cry.
Affirmations are by definition, a statement of certain perceived truths about oneself repeated over and over until manifested in reality. That’s a very academic way of saying you repeat something over and over until you believe it.
Affirmations are a way of psyching yourself up before you start your day, helping you to get into the frame of mind required to meet your goals. By using affirmations regularly enough, you will inevitably start to believe wholeheartedly in the statements and become a much more confident person all round.
Who uses them
Affirmations have been used religiously by celebrities in all walks of life, from fitness models and athletes to business owners and religious figures. Here’s a small list of those who have used affirmations to achieve great success:
You become conscious of your daily thoughts
By repeating positive thoughts over and over again aloud, you will start to repeat them to yourself internally throughout the day until your beliefs have changed to fit in line with these statements.
This makes you far more aware of your thought processes each and every day, making you question why negative thoughts manifest themselves and also helps you eliminate these toxic thoughts before they affect you.
Affirmations can give you immense confidence in yourself and what you are capable of. By constantly repeating positive statements to yourself, you will soon completely believe in everything you say. This will make you feel more competent in day-to-day life and give you much more authority in your tone, which others will pick up on.

One set of affirmations you can repeat to yourself will be what you are thankful for. This can give you a lot of perspective in terms of things that you take for granted. Being present and thankful every day irons out any negative thoughts you have about those around you and makes you thankful for what you do have instead of dwelling on what you don’t.

Once you start to notice all the positive impacts that affirmations have on your life, you will become aware of the immense effects that your mind can have on your reality. I am a big fan of psychology and I think the reason why it has become so popular in recent times is because people are waking up to the huge impact your mental state has on your life.
By having a champion mindset and a winning belief system, you become naturally attracted to success and winning. If you think small and think everyone else is better than you then you will lose every time and the world won’t show you any mercy. Affirmations create a concrete champion mindset, use them.
They are tailored to you
I think the most important factor to consider when embarking on affirmations is the fact that they are completely tailored to you. Any negatives you are experiencing in your life can be combatted by specially formulated affirmations.
They aren’t cookie-cutter, one size fits all programs. They are specifically targeted at various aspects of life and can benefit you in all manner of situations.
How to do affirmations
- Write down a list of 3 aspects about your current situation you’d like to work on and improve. This could be anything from business to athletic performance, just pick three so you don’t spread yourself too thinly. Once you’ve worked on these for at least three weeks you can assess the situation. If you’ve made the progress you’d like then pick 3 different goals. If you’d like to focus on just one then do so or if you want to pursue all 3 again then you can do that as well.
- Either think up some mantras you’d like to use to combat these issues that you could work towards each day and aren’t too unrealistic or find some tried and tested affirmations online that fit your situation and that you’d like to try.
- Make sure your affirmations are in the present tense. If your statement is in the present tense, it helps your mind believe that statement is already true and not something to work towards. This helps you to reach your goals at a much accelerated rate.
- Repeat your affirmations multiple times per day with as much belief as you can muster – I suggest once in the morning, once at midday and once before you go to bed at night. When repeated more than once in a day, your mind has an easier time integrating the affirmations into your belief system, meaning that you can double or even triple the rate of effectiveness compared to if you only used your affirmations once per day.
